Why ‘The Skimm’ Is Now The Highlight of My Mornings

March 29, 2015

It’s Sunday. That means no morning e-mail newsletter from the Skimm. Why is this even worth mentioning? I mean if you are anything like me, your email is already filled to the brim with e-mail newsletters, updates and mailing list spam — all that give you ample opportunity make sure your trash/delete/garbage can button still works.

But the Skimm is different. It’s like a Lindor truffle when all other e-mail newsletters are like dollar store box candies. And no, I don’t work for them or anything. Well, not in the sense where I get any type of money for promoting them. But I am a ‘Skimm’bassador’, which means that I have an account and can keep track of my signups. But trust me, I wouldn’t bother promoting anything if I didn’t truly believe in it. Especially if my efforts weren’t going to result in some cash. Basically, it has to be really, really worth my while.

So what exactly is is about the Skimm that makes it different from other daily email newsletters. Well, here’s some of my top reasons:

  1. It’s a Very Quick Read. We’re talking under 5 minutes. The beauty of the Skimm is the writers give you just the tip of the iceberg of the biggest and most noteworthy news stories. All snippets come with links to the original news source if you want to read more.
  2. It’s Tailored to Women. The Skimm is a very minimalist e-mail newsletter…with no graphics or fancy layout formatting (visualize Ello an email and you’ll be close!). But the branding and tone is female-centric. I think this was a smart move by the newsletter’s founders, Danielle Weisberg and Carly Zakin. It makes the newsletter feel personalized and easy to relate to.
  3. It’s Well Written and Fun. Even though the news snippets are brief, the writing style is fun and engaging. Throwing in millennial catch phrases like “Bye Felicia” keeps even us non-millennial feeling hip (and relevant).
  4. It’s a Good Use of Your Time. Even if it doesn’t take a lot of time, it clues you in on what is going on in the world. What’s the big news and events that you missed. If you’re anything like me, probably most of them!

And if you don’t want to take my word for it (that the Skimm is the most awesome thing to enter into my life since my Keurig), there’s other people raving about it too. And when I say ‘people’ I mean Oprah 😀 . But seriously, before I was always that type of person who was interested in news and current events, but always a day late and a dollar short in conversations about them because I just didn’t have time to glean out the top stories from all the major news outlets. Now, I don’t have to worry about it. I won’t say that I don’t miss anything…but I’m missing out on a lot less now!

So thank you Danielle & Carly on your efforts! Your product is great and I’m glad to spread the word along to others!
